Lets’ Begin…Again

Well my original plan for this blog has been temporarily shelved quite simply because I cannot make time for the research at the moment. I have decided instead to talk about my journey towards (hopefully!) an MBA degree. In the last 3 years I really haven’t been in too much of a hurry for this moment but right now I just feel like it’s the perfect time and so here I am with a month’s leave from work and all fired up to ace the GMAT. Today was day one and while I would love to say that I will post something every day, I sincerely doubt that will happen so I’ll make hay while the sun shines and all that.

I have spent so much time on the mba.com website today that I think I can quote stuff verbatim for the next couple of weeks. Needless to say, at the end of it I went from ‘I know there is an exam called GMAT’ to ‘I know everything there is to know about the GMAT!’. Seriously this site does an awesome job of answering every question you’ve ever had about the exam and I would recommend that anyone planning to take the test, start here. The only reason I won’t put up a list of links that you must refer to is because everything is a must read. And the things which are not a must read (articles, blogs etc.) are interesting enough to make you want to read them. So even before I had picked up a pencil to mark an answer in my first prep test, I already know the do’s and don’ts of guessing answers 😛

Anyway, after the half day long infatuation with the website, I downloaded the GMAT Prep software and decided to browse through to see what to expect. So while I won’t even think about taking either of the 2 full length practice tests yet, the Math Review section was an amazing refresher. Took me about 2 hours and just helped brush up on all the basic concepts. Of course, knowing and applying are very very different but still, it helped to know that I did actually remember how to calculate the volume of a cylinder. After the Math Review I finally faced what I had been avoiding since morning: the Diagnostic Test.

This test is the supposed to be the proverbial mirror, show you exactly where you stand before you’ve even begun your preparation, just so you know where to aim for. I hate these kinds of tests but I persevered nevertheless and here I am now writing about it :). I have yet to check my answers but I figured a little procrastination doesn’t hurt anyone.

In other news: after reading this post about timelines and checklists, I decided to add a few steps of my own. I don’t function well without some sort of structure so I figured step one was to make myself some space to study. And while I was at it, I thought, why not spruce it up a bit. Here is the result 🙂

Step 1: Set up the study table

Until next time…Cheers!
